The Intersection of Eating Disorders and Substance Use: Trends, Research and Treatment

This presentation will discuss the considerations associated with working with clients that struggle with both eating disorders and substance use disorders. Eating disorders are considered the most lethal of psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders also have high rates of mortality. Though the co-occurrence of the two has not been studied much, research suggests that over 21% of people who have struggled with an eating disorder in their lifetimes have also experienced struggles with substance use. People who have been diagnosed with both eating disorders and substance use are more likely to have increased risk for depression, anxiety, SI/SH, impulsive behavior, and past trauma. Additionally, the medical complications of each eating disorder and substance use are heightened when the disorders are co-occurring. It is suggested from the limited research available that treatment for the co-occurrence of eating disorders and substance should be done concurrently and those who are being treated for solely an ED or SUD diagnosis be screened for the other regularly.
