Understanding Grief and Loss

Grief is a universal emotion that touches each person uniquely, and the journey through it can often feel overwhelming and isolating. This training offers an exploration of grief and its multifaceted impact on individuals. Participants will learn to define grief and identify the process associated with the grieving journey. The training also covers the major types of grief and how these forms manifest in different individuals. Additionally, participants will examine the intersection between grief and substance use and obtain model, tools, and activities to support themselves and others.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define grief and identify the emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral responses associated with the grieving process.
  2. Identify and differentiate the major types of grief and recognize how they manifest in individuals.
  3. Explain the relationship between grief and substance use, including how grief can contribute to substance use behaviors and how substance use can complicate grieving.
