Prevention & Recovery

We focus on examining substance use disorder and misuse in the context of the social determinants of health.

Our staff support providers in seeing the whole person before them, not just the substance use disorder. In doing this, we ensure that we build the community infrastructure necessary to sustain healthy communities.

Current Prevention Programs

Partnership for Success

The SPF-PFS grant aims to reduce/prevent underage alcohol, underage e-cigarette and marijuana use. APNC provides training and technical assistance to North Carolina’s 10 PFS sites in the following counties: Avery, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dare-Currituck, Forsyth, Haywood, Johnston, McDowell, Onslow-Carteret, and Wilson.

NCTTA Center

In July 2022, APNC became the fiscal agent and organizing entity for the North Carolina Training & Technical Assistance Center. APNC plans to advance the effective use of Results-Based Monitoring and performance management processes, cultivate a strong and efficient T/TA system staffed by a wide range of prevention experts, and create opportunities to empower successful future leaders in the field of prevention.

Current Recovery Programs

APNC represents the recovery community at various meetings and events across the state. APNC’s recovery work is focused in Western Carolina, where there is a deep need for services in rural communities. Some current initiatives include:

  • Conduct focus groups with law enforcement offers (LEOs) to learn more about the relationships between LEOs and people who use drugs/the recovery community
  • Develop tools and trainings for clergy members to better understand how to help those with substance use disorders in their communities and how to support those in recovery
  • Develop a training series for the general public about substance use disorders and recovery to decrease stigma

APNC’s programs are funded in part by DMH/DD/SAS.
